Smartphone Note

Smartphone Note

Strangely enough most, if not all of us still use a pen and paper to make notes.  Something about writing helps us think, where as typing can counter our creative side.  This notebook, which mind you is perfect for those of you heading back to school this September, if not already, includes a slot for holding your iPhone 4 in portrait or landscape mode.

It’s called the Smart Phone note, and there is also a notepad for making hand written notes.  And if you haven’t already, there is a time when you need to copy something down from iPhone to paper, and this notepad does it in a sleek and sensible fashion without requiring you to lean to the over to read your phone’s screen; now it’s front and center.  They’ve also built-in a headphone port as well as slots for credit cards or a student ID.

You can grab one for $29, though we’re not sure if they’ll ship to the States.

Stampt iPhone App Replaces Paper Loyalty Punch Cards, Helps you Save Money

Stampt iPhone App Replaces Paper Loyalty Punch Cards, Helps you Save Money

The paper loyalty card business has long existed.  Pile that on top of the loyalty cards offered by the mainstream super markets and pharmacy and your wallet or purse is exploding. So what’s a consumer to do?

Well, there does some to be one solution, in terms of the paper loyalty cards.  And when we say paper loyalty cards, we’re referring to the coffee shops and other retailers that offer a punch card.  For example, if you get 10 punches, otherwise known as a coffee purchase, you’ll receive a free cup of coffee.  But more often than not you lose the cards and don’t have them on your person at the time of purchase.  Enter Stampt.

Stampt is an iOS app which replaces all of your paper loyalty cards.  The service is currently available in New York, Cincinnati, Chicago, and San Francisco at what the company says are hundreds of locations.  However, there is a slight catch.  The store needs to sign up, although it’s free for them to join as it is for the consumer.  To receive a stamp, you simply launch the application and using the built-in bar code scanner, scan the retailer’s Stampt loyalty card (we’re not sure if this is a physical card or a bar code on the iPhone).   We’re assuming that stores are provided a window sticker of some sort to let consumers know that they’re participating.

The Stampt app requires that you, the consumer, sign up.  Once you’ve done so it will ask to use your location and scan the area within 100 miles for retailers that are part of the program.  Since the service is free, we can only assume that Stampt will later utilize your info to market to you and show you ads.  That’s a caveat we’re willing to accept (it’s actually a brilliant idea), especially since this cuts back on paper waste and simplifies our lives.  If you want you can connect the app to your Facebook and Twitter account so your friends can see where and what you’re saving.

As of right now the Stampt app is limited to the iOS store, though you can expect a version for Android devices to roll out later this year.

SteerSafe Smartphone Vehicle Mount and Why we Think it will Fail

SteerSafe Smartphone Vehicle Mount and Why we Think it will Fail

We’re all guilty of it: driving and looking at our smartphone.  It’s dangerous to say the least, and causes numerous accidents and fatalities every year.

The Steer Safe Hands Free Car Kit hopes to combat this problem.  It attaches directly to the steering wheel and holds your smartphone just below eye level.  The mount is designed to work with any phone and they say it won’t interfere with the deployment of the airbag.  If it does you’ll be in a world of hurt, though, since the air bag fires using gun powder and deploys at and an ungodly speed.

The Steer Safe can be rotated or tilted to allow for optimal viewing or adjusting for viewing of the car’s dashboard.  Since the phone mounts on the inside portion of the steering wheel it will never hit your legs, but it could easily get in the way during emergency maneuvers.  With that said, and given the rather low usefulness of this product, we unfortunately don’t think it will be ever be fully funded on Kickstarter.com.  While the idea is good in theory – who doesn’t need a smarter smartphone mount  - the steering wheel is probably not the ideal place.  What we really need is a cheap projector that mounts to the dash and projects a HUD onto the inside of the windshield.

If you’re feeling their mojo you can pledge $25 and you’ll get one sent to your door once they begin production.

Pack-away Kettle Collapses for Tight Spaces, Expands for Heat

Pack-away Kettle Collapses for Tight Spaces, Expands for Heat

Sure, you could just toss the good old camping pot onto the fire and heat up some water, but that would be so darn pedestrian.  Plus, the water would hardly stay hot after removing it from the heat source.

The Pack-away Kettle is fully collapsible and as a result can fit into the tiniest of spaces.  The bottom is made of stainless steel so it shouldn’t wear over time, though we do have our concerns about the flexible portion since it looks like it could melt if placed into an overzealous fire.

The Pack-away Kettle comes in a variety of colors (red, blue and green) and costs 29 UK ($46).

SCUF DareDeVl Pro Review

SCUF DareDeVl Pro Review

?????

As anyone who is on my friend list can attest: it had been a long time since I logged onto my 360 before doing this review. Part of the reason was because I just didn’t have the time anymore to play, part of the reason is because I’ve been more into games on the PS3 (yes, I love SOCOM and niche JRPGs). When SCUF gaming offered to send me one of their 360 controllers, I figured I’d play a few rounds and just forget about it.

How wrong I was.

I’ll get into the actual description of the SCUF controller in a minute, but first I just wanted to say that I generally only play certain types of games anymore.  If I’m in a FPS mood, it’s going to be Battlefield Bad Company 2; normally though, I just play SOCOM.  I don’t like Call of Duty – I can’t put my finger on it exactly, but I just never got into it like some people.  While using the SCUF controller though, I found myself actually having fun while playing it.  My kill to death ratio instantly jumped from a lowly 1 : 1, to a much more respectable 6 : 1.  It might not have been perfect, but it kept me off of the bottom, and allowed me to have a decent time.

So how could I have gotten “better” just by using a different controller?  It wasn’t a fluke, because my new kill to death ratio stayed consistent while I was using the SCUF controller.  It wasn’t that I suddenly got good, because I started to suck again when I switched to a regular controller.  So what was it?  Where did the little bit of magic come from?

The design and implementation of the SCUF technology, that’s where.  One of the biggest reasons these controllers work so well, is due to the adjustable trigger stops.  “What’s a trigger stop?” you may ask – it’s simply a block on how far your trigger actually moves when you depress it, and it’s damn well brilliant.  You may not realize just how much time is wasted every time you depress and release a trigger all the way.  It may only be a fraction of a second, but that adds up.  Why do you think high-end paintball marker manufacturers like Angel can charge upwards of a grand for their hair triggers?

It’s the same basic principle here – control how far the trigger moves, and it can effectively become a hair trigger for games.  Let’s face it – controllers for consoles are in DIRE need of an upgrade anyways – everything else in the world around us is constantly upgrading, but console controllers haven’t had a significant change in forever.  While this system does work great on some games (Call of Duty for one), others have issues that need to be addressed.

It’s not the design of the SCUF controllers that presents the problem, it’s how some programmers designed their games.  When you’re playing with a normal controller, none of this is readily apparent, but when advancing your game with a SCUF, you notice it right away.  Some game designers like to change the “sweet spot” (the point on the pressure sensor in the controller at which a gun will fire) between different guns.  Battlefield Bad Company 2 is very big on this.  You might go and set up your controller for one gun (if that’s all you ever plan on using), but switch to another class, and you’ll find your settings all out of whack.

Halo Reach was another culprit of this – I had the controller set for a Needler, but as soon as I picked up a Plasma Pistol it wouldn’t fire.  SCUF is aware of these issues though, and show you how to remove the stops easily to use the controller in those games if you’d like.  “Bus Shawn,’ you might ask, “why would I want to use the SCUF controller without the trigger stops?  Isn’t it just a regular controller without them?”  Well, not so much.  The triggers can still be adjusted for how far they come up (they just won’t have the stop) – but this gem still holds other tricks up it’s sleeves.

First off, SCUF Gaming has removed the right hand analog stick on the controller, and has replaced it with a PS3 style convex analog stick.  I wish they would have gone all out and replaced both with those sticks (since I’m used to the PS3 controller); convex sticks just feel better to me, and the texture on it helps your thumb to stay put.  The other MAJOR upgrade on the SCUF controller (and I do mean major), are two paddles on the underside of the controller.  One is on either side of the raised area for the battery pack; basically in each of the valleys on your controller.  The left paddle mimics the function of whatever you have your A button set to do, while the right paddle mimics the function of the B button (when you order a controller, you can change what the paddles do if you like, A and B are standard).

These paddles are an amazing innovation, as they pretty much eliminate needing to move your thumb off of the stick to do things.  Yes, you’ll still have to move your thumb for the X and Y buttons, but I had my layout for Call of Duty where A and B were Jump and Knife, and that alone made them super useful.  I never noticed how inefficient it was before to move my thumb to jump and hurry it back to the stick to aim.

The SCUF controllers are completely tournament legal – there’s nothing artificial here to assist you along.  No rapid fire, no aim assist – they just help to amplify the skill you already have.  There are plenty of tournament winners in the UK that use SCUF controllers, and they were just approved for use by the ECL – they are just starting to pick up steam in the USA though, and are hoping to be approved for use in MLG tournaments soon.

All in all, the SCUF controllers are a VERY solid product.  While you can buy mod kits online to do things that somwehat do what the SCUF controllers accomplish, they won’t have the same level of professionalism associated with them.  Also, controllers you mod yourself won’t be allowed in tournaments like the SCUF brand.  They’re honestly not that much more than buying a brand new controller anyways, so if you’re in the market for one, I can’t recommend this enough.  An EASY five out of five stars.

Now if they can only get a PS3 model out the door…..

Pros:

Very professional look to themTournament legalMany different ways that they help improve your game

Cons:

No PlayStation 3 modelSome games are incompatibleOne concave stick and one convex stick is strange

Apple pico projector patent application makes shared workspaces fun again

By Brian Heater posted Aug 11th 2011 4:37PM Really, there's nothing new in Apple's patent flirtation with the world of projection, but the latest application does take things to a whole new level, with pico projectors connected to the iPhone, iPad and MacBook. Cupertino's "Projected Display Shared Workspaces" patent application details a utopian universe wherein tiny projectors are connected to Apple products, with communication links across devices that allow for the sharing of image data between projected displays in the aforementioned "shared workspaces." Oh, and included cameras let the user interact with the displays via gestures, Wii-style, which puts our old projector shadow puppet shows to shame.

Sony's Face-to-Avatar blimp soars through SIGGRAPH, melts the heart of Big Brother (video)

By Darren Murph posted Aug 11th 2011 1:30PM Telepresence, say hello to your future. Humans, say hello to the next generation of Chancellor Sutler. All jesting aside, there's no question that Big Brother came to mind when eying Sony Computer Science Laboratories' Face-to-Avatar concept at SIGGRAPH. For all intents and purposes, it's a motorized blimp with a front-facing camera, microphone, a built-in projector and a WiFi module. It's capable of hovering above crowds in order to showcase an image of what's below, or displaying an image of whatever's being streamed to its wireless apparatus. The folks we spoke to seemed to think that it was still a few years out from being in a marketable state, but we can think of a few governments who'd probably be down to buy in right now. Kidding. Ominous video (and static male figurehead) await you after the break.

Hitachi's 50-inch P50-GP08 3D TV could be its Japanese swan song

By Amar Toor posted Aug 11th 2011 4:06PM If the P50-GP08 is indeed Hitachi's last domestically produced TV, it would make for a pretty worthy finale. Unveiled today, this 3D TV features a 50-inch plasma screen capable of beaming images in full HD, 1920 x 1080 resolution, with a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1. The beast also packs five TV tuners, a 500GB removable HDD, a quartet of HDMI ports and a motion sensor that turns off the set after a preset period of time (between five and 60 seconds). Best of all, everything can be controlled from the comfort of an iPad or iPhone, thanks to the Wooo Remote app, scheduled for release later this month (see an image, after the break). According to AV Watch, the P50-GP08 should start shipping on August 27th for about ¥220,000 (around $2,875), though there's no word yet on whether it'll ever make it to markets overseas.

HTC Mazaa's awarded in dev contest, winners promptly splay (and auction) them to world

What would you do if you'd won an unannounced smartphone that sported Windows Phone Mango? Naturally, we hope you'd first send us the dirt, but what if you were a college student and knew the weekend was rapidly approaching? Undergrad winners of Microsoft's WPAppitUp competition are facing this smartphone / cheap beer conundrum, as they're now holding HTC Mazaas as prizes, yet many are selling them for cash instead.

If you'd like to adopt an orphan, the phones come with Qualcomm's MSM8655 SoC -- the same as the Thunderbolt and Droid Incredible 2 -- which supports (but may not feature) dual mode GSM / CDMA for world roaming. A 1GHz Scorpion CPU and the Adreno 205 GPU are in the mix, and while the over-sized earpiece seems to indicate that this is the same 12-megapixel monster previously shown off by Eldar Murtazin, one of the contest winners, Heedeok Lee, informed us that the camera is actually of 5 megapixel resolution only. Frankly, it's unclear whether the Mazaa is heading for retail shelves at all, but if you're wanting an early taste of Mango, you should consider befriending a thirsty student developer.

FTC reportedly focusing on Android, search placement in Google probe

By Donald Melanson posted Aug 11th 2011 12:50PM We've known since late June that Google has found itself the target of an FTC probe, but until now we haven't had any indication about exactly what the FTC was probing. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal today, however, the FTC is looking at both Android and Google's search practices, and specifically whether it gives preferential placement to its own products and services at the expense of its competitors. The WSJ also says the FTC is looking into allegations that Google unfairly takes information like reviews of local businesses from its competitors, and then uses it on its own sites while also pushing those competitors down in its search results. For its part, Google denies that it engages in any such practices, and says that it is "happy to answer any questions" the FTC has about its business.

Sanjay Jha hints at Motorola's plans to collect patent royalties from Android competitors

By Christopher Trout posted Aug 11th 2011 1:21PM If you haven't noticed, the mobile patent wars have been heating up lately, and Motorola hasn't exactly been sitting quietly on the sidelines. In the past year, the company's been in the courtroom with a number of major players, including Apple and Microsoft, and now the outfit seems poised to go after other Android handset makers. According to Unwired View, during a keynote speech at the Oppenheimer Technology and Communications conference, CEO Sanjay Jha signaled that Motorola could soon go on the offensive when it comes to the competition:

I would bring up IP as a very important for differentiation (among Android vendors). We have a very large IP portfolio, and I think in the long term, as things settle down, you will see a meaningful difference in positions of many different Android players. Both, in terms of avoidance of royalties, as well as potentially being able to collect royalties. And that will make a big difference to people who have very strong IP positions.

If Motorola does indeed intend to differentiate itself from its competitors by clutching tightly to its patent portfolio, could we soon see a replay of Microsoft's recent royalty collection binge? We'll just have to wait and see.

Archos' Arnova 7 G2 and 10 G2 tablets launch in Hong Kong, taste like Gingerbread

By Christopher Trout posted Aug 11th 2011 4:01AM It looks like Archos' summer of the sequels is just heating up. Less than a week ago, we spied the outfit's 8-incher at the FCC, and now our brethren at Engadget Chinese are offering up a hands-on with two more second-gen Arnovas: the Arnova 7 G2 and 10 G2. These made-over slates best their predecessors with Gingerbread and capacitive touchscreens. The original 7-inch tablet ran Froyo while its big brother came with Eclair; both sported resistive displays. The pair will also see a spec bump in the processor department, with the inclusion of a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 -- likely the same processor found in their 8-inch sibling. While we do have Hong Kong pricing -- HK$1,680 (or $215 US) and HK$1,980 (about $250 US) -- we've yet to land a release date. So, for now, we'll just stick with "coming soon to a retailer near you?" If the wait is too much to bear, hop on past the break for some hands-on love from our Chinese counterparts.
